Conquer Mode Coming to FFOW

Saturday 7 June 2008 | Post A Comment

Kaos has announced that they are adding Conquer Mode to Frontlines: Fuel of War. It should be out around late June to early July. You will be able to play the new mode on all current MP maps.

"Frontlines: Fuel of War to receive additional multiplayer game mode.

Kaos Studios and THQ are pleased to announce the upcoming release of a bonus game mode for their exciting multiplayer shooter. The added mode, named Conquer, allows players to capture objectives in any order, anywhere on the map. The mode is reminiscent of an old fan favorite in previous shooters such as Rainbow Six, Star Wars Battlefront, and Conquest in the Battlefield series; though the Frontlines version will have a few of its own tweaks.

Kaos Design Director, David Votypka states: “We’re excited to bring another avenue of gameplay to Frontlines fans. With our original flagship game mode (frontlines), we were very pleased with the type of action and teamwork it created, and the fan reception to it. By adding an additional free mode for fans to play, our goal is to extend the enjoyment and gameplay time players can get from the product. We’re working hard to show continued support and dedication to our products and the community.”

This mode will be a free download for PC and Xbox 360’s Marketplace, and will be active in all of the original multiplayer maps that shipped with the game. In addition, all new downloadable content maps for the game will also feature the bonus Conquer mode gameplay.

An exact release date is not yet final, but Kaos is currently aiming for late June to early July."

Xbox Patch Update

Wednesday 28 May 2008 | Post A Comment

KAOS has an up date on the Xbox 360 patch. It looks like they had a problem, and had to fix and send the patch back. But there will be some news coming out about downloaded weapons and maps soon.

"Hi everyone!

We wanted to update you on the status of the next title update and we’re sorry it has been so quiet, but we’re working hard on getting this update out to you as soon as possible!

The update was sent to Microsoft and unfortunately out of the many features we put in, one caused an issue that Microsoft was concerned about.

We quickly fixed the issue and resubmitted the update. We feel good about the state of the update and are waiting for feedback from Microsoft. We will let you know the status as soon as we hear back from them.

This update is a large one which is one of the reasons getting it out the door is taking so long, but it also prepares the game for some of the exciting plans we have for Frontlines in the coming weeks and months.

We understand how patient you have all been so this week we will be posting some official news about our downloadable content weaponry and maps. Better yet we are providing some screenshots soon so we hope you enjoy them!

Patch 2 for XBOX 360

Friday 4 April 2008 | Post A Comment

KAOS has released info on the upcoming patch for the Xbox 360. Here is what it includes. Its a long list.

"Summary: The below items are either “Fixed” or added “Features” for our next patch update for Frontlines: Fuel of War. This update is expected at the end of April so it’s coming SOON! We are still testing heavily but it’s looking extremely well.

There might be some small additional fixes not included in the below list. Thanks again for everyone’s support! We just wanted to give you an idea where things are at.

XLSP Dedicated:

• If players cannot enter a server because it is full, they will receive the message “game server is full” rather than “game session no longer available”.
• Custom filters will filter servers based on “minimum players” count rather than maximum, so players can find 32-player and 50-player dedicated servers faster. This also gives you the option to find only “Kaos Dedicated Servers” much easier.
• LSP Consoles are no longer freezing. This causes errors in server status in the custom server browser.
• Custom server browser will retrieve all dedicated server pings.
• Fixed - Incorrect player counts due to player not correctly registering with host player through Xbox live.
• Fixed - Incorrect player counts due to player counting as a negative number on Xbox live.
• Fixed - Incorrect player counts due to player counting as an extra player on Xbox live.

VoIP:

• New Feature! VoIP works with 50 players (previously capped at 32 players).
• New Feature! Push-to-talk squad leader chat channel. Want to chat with same team Squad leaders on your side? Now you can!
• New Feature! Proximity chat that allows you to talk to your teammates within a specific proximity.
• New Feature! Inter-vehicle chat that allows you to talk to your teammates within the same vehicle.

50 Player Maps:

• Enhanced memory usage to allow more variety of 50 player maps. We will provide a list soon of the server’s available for 50 players. Get ready for our biggest MAPS at 50 such as SolarFarm, Oilfield, Gnaw and more!
• Fixed - 50 Player Servers fail to appear in the Search Browser results menu after all clients have exited the server during gameplay.
• Fixed - 50 Player XLSP servers fail to appear in the Search Browser menus unless the LSP Console is restarted and a 32-player server is started on the same server Pod.
• Fixed - Hosted 50 player XLSP servers do not appear in Server browser. Also finding 50 player matches are much easier!

Ranked Servers:

• Fixed - Ranked servers not completing countdown when reaching min player count at times.
• Fixed - Ranked servers not allowing some players to join before match begins in some cases.
• Fixed- some ranked sessions will load players directly to end-of-match scoreboard.

Leaderboards:

• Fixed - Player statistics are missing from the overview Leaderboard when at least 2 open NAT clients quit after a ranked match begins.
• Fixed - Stalemate statistics are missing from the player overview in the Ranked Leaderboards.
• Fixed - Stats fail to be accessible when there is a Stalemate in a Ranked match in the Leaderboards when player uses new profile.
• Fixed – Air Support Time Played to be misrepresented in the Ranked Leaderboards
• Fixed - The stats fail to be recorded when a Ranked match ends by forfeit in the Leaderboards.
• Fixed - The client’s total time played is doubled on the Leaderboards after exiting and re-entering a match in the same round in some instances.
• Fixed - Suicides count as kills in the Leaderboards.

Multiplayer Gameplay:

• New Feature! Spawn Protection: Players will spawn with a few seconds of invulnerability that will end if they perform an action to prevent spawn camping.
• Fixed - Auto Balance The user is unable to switch teams in any listen or XLSP server after hosting a match with Auto Balance on in multiplayer. We also improved the auto balance process.
• Sentry guns take less damage to destroy.
• Sentry guns will cause slightly less damage.
• Grenade launcher damage vs infantry has been slightly reduced.
• Fixed – deploying drone while weapon pie HUD is button mashed leaves a headless soldier.
• Fixed - Vehicles fail to take damage after colliding with explosive barrels, causing them to explode, during MP Gameplay.
• Fixed - Players can fly to top of maps by standing on turrets, while drones fly the turrets into the air.
• Fixed - The Red Star Light Armor Vehicle machinegun fires continuously non-stop when switching from the gunner position while firing.
• Fixed - The host’s controller fails to vibrate while damaged in the gunner seats of transport helicopters and the light armor vehicles in multiplayer matches.
• Fixed: We will now receive vibration reaction from your controller when getting hit when inside a vehicle ( driver or passenger)

Single Player Gameplay:

• Bots that target player from behind cover remain in cover after they empty their clip.

Sound Director, Matthew Harwood will be talking with Brian Holinka for an interview for an upcoming podcast. Mitch has made a thread on the official forums for you to post questions.

"Our intrepid Sound Director and part-time lumberjack Matthew Harwood will be luring an unsuspecting Brian Holinka into his studio for an interview for our upcoming podcast. The interview will focus on the Desert Combat and Trauma Studios days and we'd like to include your questions as part of the feature.

Brian's bio follows and please reply to this post with any questions, again, related to Desert Combat and Trauma Studios... Thanks!

Brian currently works as Lead Technical Designer on Frontlines: Fuel of War. A part-time programmer, part-time designer, he's had his hand in many parts of the game but focused on vehicle programming and design. He began his career in the videogame industry working on the Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942 while a lieutenant in the US Air Force. He only flew desks in the Air Force however, and transferred into the reserves to move to New York City to work with Trauma Studios. He's been in New York making cool things blow-up ever since. He continues to struggle with a strong soda addiction to this day."

Punkbuster Integration

Tuesday 18 March 2008 | Post A Comment

KAOS has announced that Punkbuster Integration will be included in the next patch.

"THQ and Kaos Studios have contracted with Even Balance, Inc. to integrate their PunkBuster anti-cheat software into Frontlines: Fuel of War. This will be added in an upcoming patch and more details will be released soon."

This is good news for those who play on line. With the wide use of cheats, every game that has on line play needs cheat protection.

Update On The Upcoming PC Patch

Friday 14 March 2008 | Post A Comment

KAOS has an update for us on the upcoming patch for the PC. Here is what they had to say.

"Hello all,

We have been pretty deep in the trenches of development. We are working hard at not only preparing to release to other territories such as China, Japan, Czech Republic, and Poland but also patches and feature enhancements. You will soon have many other countries to battle it out with in multiplayer!

Our 1.0.2 patch (as some are starting to see test servers pop up in the browser) ties into these other territories and this is why things are taking longer than we would like. There are server fixes, controller fixes, new server launcher tools, remote console support, audio fixes (that should help a portion of people out there) plus other things we are waiting on legal clearance before announcing.

Although we want to release this as soon as possible we need to put in the time to make the patch solid. Again, the patch is still in test and we will notify everyone when it is ready. Thanks for your patience!

Thanks,

Joe Halper"

Xbox 360 Status Update

Tuesday 11 March 2008 | Post A Comment

KAOS has an update for us concerning the Xbox 360. Here is what they had to say.

"I’m happy to provide a status update for the 360. We have some fixes & enhancements in the works and we wanted to keep everyone in the loop. The below are our top ones and not inclusive to all the items we might be looking to address.

* Unranked Issues “Session no longer available”: We are close to a fix for this issue and we provide an update after it’s fully tested.
* We tackled most of the “Session no longer available” issues but there are a couple left we are still working hard on. We plan to provide a “Server is full” message due to the fact sometimes the servers fill up before you can get in. The current message is misleading in this case for “Session is no longer available”.
* Sometimes you will also notice servers that state 28/32 that you’re not able to join. This issue is similar where the server is full but the number is incorrect in the browser. Again, we do have a fix in the works for this issue.
* VOIP & Squad Fixes/Enhancements: We are really digging deep into providing some updates based on everyone’s feedback.
* 50 player Servers & updates: There will be more 50 player servers available soon and stayed tuned for ways to make sure finding a great 50 match much easier.
* Spawning: We are investigating possibilities for temp invulnerability when for you spawn to address spawn camping tactics.
* Controls: Investigating mis-mappings with the Legacy control scheme.
* Exploits: We do have some fixes we are testing and reviewing to address any exploits found.

Thanks again for everyone’s support and please keep up the feedback!

David Schulman
Senior Producer
THQ | Kaos Studios"

There are some good fixes there. So keep a eye here for more news.

PC Demo Postponed

Monday 10 March 2008 | Post A Comment

The PC DEMO that was supposed to be out on March 11th is postponed. Here is what KAOS had to say.

"Today, both Kaos Studios and THQ have agreed to postpone the multiplayer PC Demo. Studio development efforts are being applied to feature fixes and enhancements to support the existing community. Kaos Studios recognizes the overwhelming support the community has given since release and is doing everything they can to deliver the best gaming experience possible.

Thanks,

Joe Halper"

While this is bad news for some. It is good news for those who have the game. They are putting all their effort into the retail game. So keep an eye out here for a date for the DEMO.

New Patch Info

Sunday 9 March 2008 | Post A Comment

KAOS Mitch as said we should have some news about a new patch sometime this week.

"We are actively planning to fix issues and add features to the game.

Some of this has been posted on these boards and elsewhere.

I will be posting some updates on the status page this week that recap work we've done since release and what we've previously announced is in development with some additions and further information.

This week we should also have information on the next patch"

PC Upcoming Downtimes

Friday 7 March 2008 | Post A Comment

KAOS has announced there will be a short downtime for the PC login servers coming up.

"Our login servers will be offline for maintenance between 8:30 am (EST) and 11 am (EST) on Tuesday, March 10th and Friday, March 13th, 2008.

During this time you may not be able to join online games or may lose connection with online games you are playing.

This only affects PC players."

So during that time you will need to play the SP to get your Frontlines: Fuel of War fix.

Ranked Server Update

Friday 7 March 2008 | Post A Comment

KAOS has an update concerning the Ranked Servers for the Xbox 360. Here is what they had to say.

"We think we have two problems fixed that we’ve been working on since last weekend. One is the 0/32 server issue. We rolled out a fix to most of the servers already… and the rest will be done tomorrow. The other is the problem some people have been having with ranked servers. That update is being finished as this is written and we are rolling it overnight and tomorrow morning… so it should be ready for you guys to play on this weekend.

We’ve also added a lot of servers this week and will be adding even more tomorrow and over the weekend. Depending on the location, it can take 1-3 days to get them set-up and configured - but we are working around the clock to get servers up (including more 50 player servers) to meet the great demand we’re seeing."

Audio Fix!

Thursday 6 March 2008 | Post A Comment

KAOS has posted a possible Audio Fix for people crashing due to audio problems.

"This is a possible fix for people with the “audio crash”.

We are still testing this and will relase it in a hotfix or patch but are posting this for people to use at their own risk.

Follow the steps below:

1. Move the files OpenAL32.dll and wrap_oal.dll out of the directory C:\Program Files\THQ\Frontlines-Fuel of War\Binaries to your desktop or another safe location in case you need them later.
2. Download the OpenAL Installer from Creative.
3. Run the installer.
4. Follow installer directions.
5. Once the install is done, run the game.

If you still crash after this please make sure you have updated your sound drivers. You should also make sure Windows is up-to-date.

We have had good success with this fix in testing but, again, use at your own risk!"

Keep an eye on the new Status Page for updates.

And the second one is about a ranked server fix for Xbox 360.

"

We currently have a ranked server fix in testing for Xbox 360 users that should let them join ranked games consistently and without issue.

We hope to have this out later today depending on testing. Stay tuned for more details!"

Xbox 360 Update Soon and Server Updaes

Tuesday 4 March 2008 | Post A Comment

KAOS has two updates for us. The first one is about the Xbox 360 update.

"Hello Everybody,

I wanted to provide a quick update on our 360 progress regarding patches for FFOW.

We are making excellent progress in addressing issues that have been reported in the XBOX 360 version of FFOW. Your continued feedback will help us to further improve the title.

We plan to provide a list of items soon that we will be addressing. Until the release of the list, I wanted to assure everyone we are reading every single thread!

We will have more details shortly and will post them as soon as possible."

The second update is about the servers.

"All,

The 'session no longer available' message should now be fixed on ALL US-based servers that have a player count of 0/32. For the Europe servers, I am still working on it. (They should be all fixed within an hour or so of this posting.)

With that being said, I'd also like to make a few points:

- This fix is only for the retail game servers. The demo game servers will be patched later this week. (It requires a different fix.)

- There are other reasons why the 'session no longer available' message is displayed. We are still working on these.

Thanks!"

Dave Greco Answers Your Questions!

Thursday 28 February 2008 | Post A Comment

The Burning Truth has released the Q&A with Dave Greco, Concept Artist at Kaos Studios. Here is some of that Q&A.

"The environments in Frontlines really give off that sense of looming problems and desolation. The city maps (specifically, Gnaw) do a really great job capturing this with discarded shopping carts, bikes, cars, etc, just sitting out on the road, which helps set up an atmosphere that the future is really dark, gritty, and problematic. What inspiration did you use to create the concept art for these environments? Did you look at photos cities after disasters to get an idea of how civilization functioned after a destructive event?

We looked at a lot of photo reference around the world of bombed out locations and desolate towns. We tried to study what happens to modern places once people abandon it. From wildlife growing over modern technology to things just left in the streets. We basically just painted what a place might look like after it was bombed out… and tried to imagine 10 years after it."

"
-----------------------------------------
Starting a Listen Server w/FFOW Ver 1.0.0
-----------------------------------------

Look for the 'FFOW_NAT_IP.bat' file in the 'THQ\Frontlines-Fuel of War\Binaries' folder

Right click on the file and select 'Edit'

You will see the following command line:
ffow -CustomPublicIP=XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

Replace the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with your pc's IP.
(For help finding your public IP, goto http://www.whatsmyip.org/)

Save the .bat file with the IP in it.

Now Open/Run the bat file - it will open the game and you should be able to start a listen server with a valid IP and others will be able to join your game.
